Lumberjacking
Lumberjacking skill is used for harvesting logs from trees with a hatchet. A hatchet can also be used on the logs for converting them to boards which weigh less – however converting logs to boards is not required when using them as crafting materials. These wooden crafting materials are used with the Carpentry and Bowcraft/Fletching skills.
The amount of wood harvested from a tree on a successful skill check will always be 3 logs. The type of log resource harvested (Regular, Shadow, Copper, Bronze, Verite or Valorite) is dependent on the random resource type the tree gets assigned, when you first start chopping the tree.
See: Harvest Banks for more detailed information.
Board Resource Types
Lumberjacking Skill Gains
While using a higher quality tool will help influence whether you yield the best possible resource type from your current harvest bank for each chop at a tree, it is not helpful when trying to gain skill. When a check to gain skill is made, it is based on your current effective harvest skill, including tool bonuses. The higher your effective skill, the lower your chance at skill gains. Accordingly, it is recommended to just use regular iron crafted tools when trying to optimize your skill gain chances.
After reaching 100 Lumberjacking skill, you will no longer gain a skill gain chance from some resource types:
Skill% | Resource Type No Longer Provides a Skill Gain Chance |
---|---|
100 | Regular |
110 | Shadow |
115 | Copper |
Note: Your effective/modified Lumberjacking skill does not allow you to harvest a better resource type – the resource type you can harvest is based solely on your base/unmodified Lumberjacking skill.
Example: A character with 99.0% Lumberjack skill using a Shadow hatchet that grants +5% skill bonus for a total of 104.0% effective skill, still can not harvest a bronze harvest bank since their base skill is 99.0% and you need a base skill of 100.0% to harvest a bronze bank.
Weapon Damage Bonus
You also gain a bonus amount to weapon damage caused by axe weapons (except the war axe). This bonus damage is equal to 1% damage bonus per 5 skill points, for a maximum of 24% at 120 Lumberjack skill.
