Archery
Overview
Archery is the primary combat skill for using ranged weapons such as bows and crossbows. It determines your accuracy with these weapons and allows you to attack enemies from a distance. Archery requires ammunition (arrows for bows, bolts for crossbows) and cannot be used while moving.
- Primary use: Combat with bows and crossbows
- Secondary benefits: Safe combat from distance, pulling enemies
- Related skills: Tactics (damage bonus), Anatomy (damage bonus)
How to Use
Combat Usage:
- Equip a bow or crossbow in your hands
- Have ammunition in your backpack (arrows/bolts)
- Stand still for at least 1 second before shooting
- Double-click the target or use attack last/nearest macros
- Maintain distance - cannot shoot in melee range
Movement Restrictions:
- Must be stationary for 1 second before firing
- Moving interrupts the shot and resets the timer
- No “moving shot” ability available on this server
- Plan positioning carefully before engaging
Ammunition Management:
- Arrows for bows (weight: 0.1 each)
- Bolts for crossbows (weight: 0.1 each)
- 40% chance to recover ammo from animals/monsters
- Ammunition is consumed on each shot
- Keep plenty of ammo in backpack
Training Methods
Starting Out (0-30)
- Purchase from NPC: Bowyer, Ranger, Ranger Guildmaster
- Training dummy: Cannot use training dummies for Archery
- Archery Butte: Best training method (see below)
- Hunt weak creatures: Rabbits, birds, rats
Archery Butte Training
- Setup: Place Archery Butte facing east or south
- Position: Stand 5-6 tiles away, directly in line
- Requirements: Bow/crossbow and ammunition
- Skill Range: -25 to +25 from current skill
- Benefits: Safe training, recoverable ammo, score tracking
- Double-click butte when empty to recover arrows/bolts
Intermediate Training (30-60)
- Continue with Archery Butte if within skill range
- Hunt appropriate monsters: Orcs, lizardmen, harpies
- Keep distance: 2-10 tiles optimal range
- Stock ammunition: Carry 200-300 arrows/bolts
Advanced Training (60-90)
- Archery Butte effective until skill exceeds +25 range
- Hunt stronger creatures: Ogres, trolls, drakes
- Combat training: Real combat gives consistent gains
- Ammunition crafting: Learn Fletching to make arrows
Expert Training (90-100)
- High-level hunting: Dragons, daemons, liches
- PvP practice: Sparring gives good gains
- Patience required: Gains slow significantly
Mastery Training (100-120)
- NOT POSSIBLE - Archery cap cannot exceed 100.0

- Maximum skill level is 100.0

Skill Mechanics
Hit Chance Formula:
- Uses standard combat hit chance calculation
- Archery skill vs opponent's weapon skill
- Modified by Tactics for accuracy bonus
- Affected by target's parrying ability
Damage Calculation:
- Uses standard weapon damage formulas
- Tactics bonus: (Skill - 50) × 30% / 50 (max 30% at GM)
- Anatomy bonus: Skill × 10% / 100 + 1% at exactly 100.0 (max 11% at GM)
- Strength bonus applies
Range Requirements:
- Minimum: Cannot shoot in adjacent tiles (melee range)
- Maximum: 10 tiles for most bows
- Line of sight required
Special Mechanics:
- Must stand still for 1 second
- Paralysis/freeze prevents shooting
- Casting blocks movement shots
- 40% ammo recovery vs creatures

Special Abilities and Effects
Weapon Abilities:
- Different bows have different special moves
- Examples: Armor Ignore, Moving Shot, Dismount
- Requires sufficient Mana and skill levels
- Check individual weapon properties
Archery-Specific Features:
- Shoot while hidden (reveals you)
- Interrupt spell casting on hit
- Force target movement with damage
- Pull single enemies from groups
Limitations:
- No shooting while moving
- Cannot shoot in melee range
- Requires ammunition always
- Blocked by paralysis/freeze
Tips and Strategies
Best Practices:
- Always carry 200+ ammunition
- Position before engaging enemies
- Use terrain/obstacles for safety
- Combine with hiding for ambushes
Training Efficiency:
- Archery Butte until it stops giving gains
- Real combat for higher skill levels
- Make your own ammunition
- Train Tactics simultaneously
Combat Tactics:
- Kite enemies while shooting
- Use para blow/shots to control
- Switch to melee if gap closes
- Pre-cast spells between shots
Equipment Choices:
- Bows: Faster, uses arrows
- Crossbows: Slower, more damage
- Heavy Crossbow: Highest damage
- Composite Bow: Good balance
