Animal Taming

Animal Taming is a skill that allows players to tame wild creatures and turn them into loyal pets and companions. Tamed animals can assist in combat, carry items, and provide various other benefits. This skill works in conjunction with Animal Lore to control and command pets effectively.

• Secondary benefits: Access to powerful combat companions and mounts
• Related skills: Animal Lore (required for controlling pets), Veterinary (for healing pets)

To use the Animal Taming skill:

1. Activate the skill through your skill menu or macro
2. Target a tamable creature - you'll see the message “Tame which animal?”
3. Stay within range and maintain line of sight during the taming process
4. Wait for the taming process to complete (takes 3-5 attempts, each lasting 3 seconds)
5. Success or failure will be determined based on your skill level vs the creature's difficulty

Important Requirements:

• The creature must be tamable (not all creatures can be tamed)
• You must have enough follower slots (check with Animal Lore)
• The creature cannot already be tamed by someone else
• Some creatures require specific conditions (e.g., must be subdued to low health first)

Success Factors:

• Your Animal Taming skill level vs creature's minimum tame skill
• Using a Tamer's Crook increases success chance
• Creatures cannot be damaged during the taming process
• Some creatures may anger on failed attempts and attack

• 0-10: Tame Rats, Cats, and Birds (MinTameSkill: 0.9)
• 10-20: Tame Cows (MinTameSkill: 11.1) and Rabbits (MinTameSkill: 18.9)
• 20-30: Tame Dogs (MinTameSkill: 21.3), Timber Wolves (MinTameSkill: 23.1), and Horses (MinTameSkill: 29.1)
• NPCs: Visit Animal Trainers or Ranchers in towns to learn the skill

• 30-40: Tame Black Bears and Polar Bears (MinTameSkill: 35.1)
• 40-50: Tame Brown Bears (MinTameSkill: 41.1), Cougars (MinTameSkill: 41.1), and Alligators (MinTameSkill: 47.1)
• 50-60: Tame Panthers and Snow Leopards (MinTameSkill: 53.1), Grey Wolves (MinTameSkill: 53.1), Snakes (MinTameSkill: 59.1)

• Can be increased up to 120.0 using Skill Scrolls

Skill Scrolls:

• Requires GM (100.0) in the skill before use
• Increases skill cap by +1.0 per scroll
• Maximum total skill scroll cap: 120.0 across all skills
• Color coded: Green (Animal type skills)
• Stackable up to 60,000
• Each scroll consumed increases the cap permanently

Skill Balls:

• Increases current skill level (not cap)
• Bonus ranges from 5-20 skill points
• Cannot be used on Animal Taming in most configurations
• Useful for training complementary skills like Animal Lore

Taming Success Formula:

• Base fail chance: 95% if your skill equals minimum tame skill
• Fail chance decreases as your skill exceeds minimum requirement
• At 20+ skill points above minimum: 10% fail chance
• Formula: failChance = 0.95 - (skillDifference / 20 * 0.85)

Skill Gain Mechanics:

• Skill gain check occurs when successfully taming
• Gain range: MinTameSkill - 25 to MinTameSkill + 25
• Each previous owner adds +6 to minimum skill requirement
• Passive Animal Lore gains during taming attempts

Control Requirements:

• Requires 80% of MinTameSkill in Animal Lore to control
• Example: 50 MinTameSkill creature needs 40 Animal Lore

Follower Slots:

• Each creature uses 1-5 control slots
• Players start with 5 maximum follower slots
• Check creature's ControlSlots property

The Animal Taming skill currently does not have specific skill masteries but Animal Lore has.

What is Pet Bonding?

• A permanent connection between pet and master
• Bonded pets can be resurrected after death
• Shows “bonded” status in pet's context menu

Bonding Requirements:

• Pet must be bondable (not all pets can bond)
• You must be the pet's owner (not just a friend)
• Your Animal Taming skill must be >= pet's MinTameSkill - 0.1
• Example: A creature with 50.0 MinTameSkill requires 49.9+ Animal Taming to bond

How to Bond a Pet:

1. Start the Process: Feed your pet when it's at maximum loyalty (Wonderfully Happy)
2. Wait Time: The bonding process takes 3 hours of real time
3. Stay Active: Pet must remain in the world (not stabled) during this time
4. Complete Bonding: After 3 hours, feed the pet again to complete the bond
5. Confirmation: You'll receive the message “Your pet has bonded with you!”

Important Notes:

• Only the owner can start the bonding process (friends cannot)
• If you abandon the pet, bonding timer resets after 1 day
• Bonding timer persists through server restarts
• Some special pets may override normal bonding requirements

Loyalty System:

• All pets use a 0-100% loyalty system
• Maximum loyalty = “Wonderfully Happy” (100%)
• Loyalty affects pet obedience (below 25% = won't obey commands)
• Non-bonded pets decay loyalty at 4.16% per hour (24 hours to 0%)
• Bonded pets decay loyalty at 2.08% per hour (48 hours to 0%)

Feeding Your Pet:

• Drag and drop food onto your pet
• Each food item increases loyalty by 10%
• Different pets prefer different food types:
  1. Carnivores: Raw meat
  2. Herbivores: Fruits, vegetables, hay
  3. Omnivores: Most food types
  4. Special diets: Some creatures have unique preferences
• Pet will animate when eating (animals bow, monsters do eating animation)
• Message “The animal shies away” means wrong food type

Food Benefits:

• Restores pet stamina (helps with movement)
• Increases loyalty (keeps pet obedient)
• Required to start/complete bonding process
• Stabled pets maintain loyalty without feeding

Taming Process Effects:

• Angered creatures may attack on failed attempts
• Bard-pacified creatures have 75% chance to remain calm after anger
• Some creatures must be subdued (reduced to 10% health) before taming

Pet Abilities:

• Tamed creatures retain their natural abilities
• Some pets have special abilities (passive, active, ultimate)
• Pet skills can be trained through combat

Best Practices:

• Always check if you have enough follower slots before attempting
• Use Animal Lore on creatures first to see their stats and requirements
• Bring a Tamer's Crook for increased success rates
• Have Veterinary skill to heal pets during and after taming
• Start with easier creatures even if below your skill level for guaranteed gains

Common Mistakes:

• Attempting to tame creatures too far above your skill level
• Not maintaining line of sight during taming
• Allowing creatures to be damaged during the process
• Forgetting to check follower slot availability
• Not having sufficient Animal Lore to control after taming

Efficient Training:

• Focus on creatures 10-20 points below your skill for consistent gains
• Tame and release to continue gaining skill
• Work in safe areas to avoid interruption
• Consider using skill gain bonuses from equipment

• Tamer's Crook - Consumable item that increases taming success chance
• No other tools required for basic taming
